Cold, Kriek, and Inventory

Another weekend of zub-zero lows and single digit highs….not good weather for brewing in the unheated garage. All was not lost though. I was able to add the Montmorency cherries to one of the batches of lambic that has been fermenting for well over a year now. For the roughly 5 gallons of beer, I added 5 lbs of cherries that have been frozen since summer. The initial plan was for 10lbs for a rate of 2lbs per gallon, however I will give this a taste in a month or so and then decide how much more to add.

The second brewing related project for the weekend was to inventory my supplies….The good news is that I have more hops than I thought. With all the Cascade/Amarillo/Columbus it looks like some barley wine or double IPA is in my future. Additionally, I have quite a bit of aged 2005 and 2006 Saaz, Hallertau, and Spalt hops that will be making their way into some more lambic style beers as soon as the weather allows.

Lastly, I was going to also start a batch of cider, however I could not determine which airlocks came out of the sour fermenters so I will wait until I get a new one to start the cider…should be some time this week.   And the forecast for next weekend is for the mid 20s so I am hopefully brewing a couple batches as long as the weather is “reasonable”.
